As we welcome 2019 and renew our commitment to support solutions towards a fair and peaceful future for all, I have been reflecting on some of UNA-Canada’s key accomplishments in 2018, and how each has contributed to building us better. (This includes what we learned from our failures and disappointments too, right?)
Our Green Spaces programme, launched in 2018, has provided over 220 students across Canada meaningful summer work opportunities, while contributing to Canada’s commitments on climate, environment and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
UNA-Canada has also launched Youth Navigate the TRC Calls to Action, engaging over 400 youth about the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The programme asks youth what they can do in their young lives towards a more cooperative future. Meanwhile, Canada Service Corps brought our first youth delegation to the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP 24) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Katowice, Poland, providing a Canadian youth voice and giving invaluable experience to the Canadian youth delegates. The young delegates impressed the heck out of us.
We are equally proud that our prestigious International Development and Diplomacy Internship Programme, which continues to invest in the future of Canadian Global Citizens, is supported by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada. UNA-Canada will, as we have for two decades, deploy deserving young Canadians to UN Agencies around the world to address important issues that affect us both in Canada and around the world.
None of this would have been possible without you. Your contributions throughout the year have built us better. We need you to be able to provide these opportunities – and to generate the energy to strive for a better world every day.
I am launching 2019 with gratitude to my dedicated team of passionate staffers and volunteers (including the dedicated volunteers in our Branches), and I am appreciative that we have donors willing to commit real resources, confident that they will be used with care and diligence.
Happy New Year to all,
