Pearson Peace Medal Book – Profiles in Humanitarian Courage – by Patricia Pearson
UNA-Canada is proud to announce the publication of a new book on our Medal and its recipients. This book is an extraordinary compendium of individuals who have, and continue, to lead in building a better, more just and fair world, through dint of extraordinary focus and care. The United Nations Association in Canada is proud to have honoured our first thirty laureates, and by sharing these stories, to help mark the great humanitarians who have made Canada and the world better.
The Pearson Peace Medal, launched in 1979, is seen as a resonant vehicle to recognize a very special cadre of Canadians who, at their core, were galvanized by a vision shared with UNA-Canada. Our role is to educate and engage Canadians in knowledge about and understanding of the United Nations and international issues of concern to us all. Lester B. Pearson was, himself, a very Canadian model of an engaged global citizen.
Over the United Nations Association in Canada’s history – as old as the UN, and formerly the Canadian Society for the League of Nations – this Association’s existence is a manifestation of Canadian’s pragmatic acknowledgement that, while not a great power, our future is tied to being present and active in the wider world. This presence at the UN and in the international sphere was, and remains, as much valued for trade and prosperity as for peace, security and justice.
